Top Tips for Getting Your Dream Loft Conversion

September 29, 2016

A loft conversion can often be a hefty investment but don’t worry, as well as having some top tips to keep everything under control we can also sort out your finance!

Loft ConversionBefore planning a loft conversion, you will need to check your loft can handle it. Whether it’s for another bedroom or a secluded office area, your loft will have to be at least 2.3 metres at the highest point in order to provide enough space. If this is an issue you could consider lowering the floor or changing the roof, but this does cost a considerable amount so it is best to call a professional for advice.

Although for the majority of loft conversions planning permission isn’t needed, it is always best to check before any work goes underway. It is usually only when your loft goes outside your allowance of permitted development that planning permission is needed. It can take up to 8 weeks to be approved, so if needed it is best to send it off in advance to minimise delays.

There are certain building regulations that your house will have to be checked for. Extra fire doors may have to be fitted not just in the loft but in other rooms as well; this will ensure a safe passage in case of emergencies. It is best to get a specialist to look at this before so the appropriate changes can be made.

Having the finances ready to get your dream loft conversion can really make a difference. We can help with this bit but it’s to you to choose how you want the additional space to look. A basic loft conversion, using the current space available will cost around £10,000, whilst a more complex Mansard conversion that runs the whole length of the house will cost a little more at approximately £30,000.
