It is usually only when your loft goes outside your allowance of permitted development that planning permission is needed. It can take up to 8 weeks to be approved, so if needed it is best to send it off in advance to minimise delays.

Extra fire doors may have to be fitted not just in the loft but in other rooms as well; this will ensure a safe passage in case of emergencies.
